Deeply mysterious. Yet familiar. Silhouettes present a different visual dimension to story-telling by encompassing these two distinct qualities. They present a play of shapes, scrapping away the details but focusing on the outlines and their interactions.

In the wild, many things have to align to make great silhouettes. Clear skies at sunrise/sunset, offering a golden glow to the horizon, is an important requirement. An undisturbed foreground is another essential. And, the key to the photograph – a subject whose shape stands out against the light. For the wildlife photographer, few places in the world offer this combination as much as Masai Mara does.

On Darter Photography’s recent photography tour to Masai Mara, we had plenty of opportunities to work with silhouettes. And we were able to experiment with story-telling through this photography technique. Here are a few photographs from this tour.
