Our travel photographer Manish Lakhani spends a lot of time in the mountains, especially in the Trans-Himalayan wonderlands of Ladakh. And you can see him there in all seasons including the cold winters when the landscape is magically transformed by an abundance of snow and ice. He is often asked about his love for Ladakh, and the love for winters in these high-altitude landscapes. In this story, Manish narrates briefly about his attachment to winters in Ladakh, and shares his magnificent images. Manish, along with our travel photographer Arun Bhat, is also leading our photography tour to Ladakh in the winter season, that we conduct every February. Text and photographs by Manish Lakhani.
I get this question again and again, why winter? Why do you love winter?
Why Winter, can be answered in the quotes of two wise men: “I prefer winter, when you feel the bones of the landscape – the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter, something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show,” and in equally poignant words, “It is the life of the crystal, the architect of the flake, the fire of the frost, the soul of the sunbeam. This crisp winter air is full of it.”
Nothing burns like the cold, but only for a while. Then it gets inside you slowly slowly and starts to fill you up with feelings and after a while, you don’t have the strength to fight with cold and at you will fall in love with ice.
I am visiting Ladakh in winter for 12 years and coming winter will be my 13th and when I get a question about winter, I have nothing much to say about it as I love what it offers me.
I love everything about this highland, dramatic landscapes, warm-hearted people and even aminals. I would like to share some images of my winter journeys in this highland of Ladakh. Hope you will enjoy as I do.
Looks exciting enough? Join us on our winter Ladakh photography tour to experience and photograph this magic, mentored by our ace travel photographers Manish Lakhani and Arun Bhat.
