Photograph Description: Looking at the bigger picture, rather than focusing on intricate details, is a good way to present a different perspective in wildlife photography.  There are many dead trees remnants of a drowned forests that dot the Bhadra Reservoir. These trees seem more numerous in summers when the water levels drop substantially. Many birds, including Indian Cormorants pictured here, use these trees as perches.

Photographer’s Perspective: On an early morning boat safari on the Bhadra Reservoir, the interplay of clouds and mist ensured some very interesting variations in light. The bluish hues of the sky and the hills in the background had a very soothing feel to them. The golden light of the sun lit up the tree magically, adding a dramatic foreground. And the cormorants utilizing every inch of real estate on the tree made the photograph come alive.

Technical Details: Focal Length 200mm | f/8 | 1/2500sec | ISO 640 In this case, a faster shutter speed (with higher ISO) reduces the impact of shake due to the boat rocking in the water.

Shreeram M V made this image during Darter’s Wildlife Photography Workshop at Bhadra in April 2014.
