Tour Highlights

Bandipur, one of India’s first Tiger Reserves, is a place that needs no introduction. Part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, this beautiful forest is a treasure-house for wildlife photographers and wildlife lovers. The majestic tiger – the National Animal of India – of course holds its forte here. In addition, the forest is well-known for its elephants, stealthy leopards, mighty gaurs, mega-herds of Spotted Deer and its stunning diversity of birdlife. This photography tour aims to rediscover the joys of exploring the forest and learn how to photograph wildlife under the guidance of the Darter Photography Mentor.

At Darter Photography, we believe in a balanced approach between wildlife photography and natural history. Our tours are crafted with a wide range of learning and experience activities that will give you a 360-degree view of wildlife photography. Your mentor will guide you on various aspects of wildlife photography, including the camera settings, composition ideas and story-telling with your photographs. He will assist you in the field to ensure that you capture interesting moments on the safaris. And he will review your photographs periodically to work on your strengths and correct any mistakes.

On this tour, we’ll do 4 safaris into Bandipur Tiger Reserve. While we’ll make every effort to photograph the elusive big cats, we’ll ensure that we make the best of every photography opportunity that presents itself. That will help you work on your wildlife photography skills and build a lovely portfolio of photographs from your weekend in the wild.

Tour Highlights

  • Learn about wildlife photography techniques and the natural history of the deciduous forests from our Darter Photography Expert through classroom sessions and on-the-field guidance.
  • Explore the beautiful forests of Bandipur on 4 Jeep Safaris. Get an opportunity to see the 2 big cats (Bengal Tigers and Leopards) along with herds of Elephants, Gaurs, Chital and Sambar, not to mention the antics of Gray Langurs and the shy Barking Deer. You may also come across forest birds like the Malabar Trogon, Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Racket-tailed Drongo, Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Hawk Eagle and many more.
  • Review your photographs everyday with the Darter Photography Expert. In our highly-appreciated review sessions, we approach the photograph from the photographer’s story and perspective. We guide the photographer in working on both the strengths and improvement areas to convey a better story through the photographs.
  • Discuss your observations and learning with the group in our unique debriefing sessions. Everyone has a unique perspective in observing natural phenomena and photographing them. These discussions have always helped our participants learn a lot from each other, in addition to fostering lasting friendships.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 (Friday).

Reach the Bandipur Lodge (run by Jungle Lodges and Resorts) by noon. We check into our cottages, relax for a bit and gather for lunch. After lunch, we have a welcome session where we go through a round of introductions (in case we haven’t done that already) followed by an orientation on the tour and wildlife at Bandipur by the Darter Photography Expert.

It is then time for the first safari of the tour. We get into the vehicle allotted to us and head out into the jungle for the evening safari. The cool breeze and the greenery of the forest keeps us company as we experience and photograph the myriad forms of life in the forest – the mighty elephants, the huge herds of Chital, the colourful birds…may be even a big cat.

After the safari, we gather for a session on Fundamental Techniques of Wildlife Photography. This will be followed by reviews of photographs that you’ve clicked on the evening drive. After dinner, we retire for the day.

Day 2 (Saturday).

At dawn, we wake up, have a cup of tea and head out for our second foray into the jungle. Every safari in the forest is a delightful experience. And, on a sunny day, the soft morning light might give us some wonderful photography opportunities. We return to the lodge for breakfast.

After lunch, the Darter Photography Expert will review the photographs taken during the morning safari. Then, we’ll have a session on different kinds of Light in Wildlife Photography. And, it’s time again for the third safari.

In the evening, we’ll have a discussion about the observations of the past two days in the forest. And, we’ll discuss the photography learning/experiences of all the participants.

Day 3

(Sunday). The last morning of the tour is here. We head out into the forest for our last safari to photograph the magnificence of the forest. After breakfast, it’s time to bid goodbye to the amazing forest, with many memories and (hopefully) full memory cards.

The accompanying Darter Photography Expert would help you with:

  • On-field assistance during the safaris from a photography as well as a naturalist’s perspective
  • Sessions on photography that would help you get good photographs during the tour
  • Photography review sessions to give you feedback on your photographs

Please note that the itinerary above is subject to fair weather and other factors. Darter Photography reserves the right to make changes to the above itinerary at any point of time. Also, please note that photographing the wildlife mentioned above and pictured in the slideshow is indicative and dependent on various external factors, including weather and the wildlife being spotted during our safaris.
