Madagascar is renowned for its extraordinary biodiversity, with over 90% of its wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. The island’s isolation over tens of millions of years has allowed unique species to evolve in isolation, resulting in a fascinating range of endemic animals and plants. Among the most iconic of these are the lemurs, a group of primates that diversified into over 100 species. From Indri, the world’s largest lemur that is found in the eastern rainforests, to the iconic Ring-tailed lemur to the nocturnal Aye-aye, these primates are a symbol of Madagascar’s wildlife.
The evolution and diversity of reptiles on the island is jaw-dropping. Over 100 species of chameleons, including the world’s largest and smallest species, call Madagascar their only home. From striking green Day geckos to those masters of camouflage – the Leaf-tailed geckos, to the skin-dropping Fish-scale geckos, there are evolutionary marvels that abound here. The island’s flora is equally remarkable, with species like the towering baobab trees and rare orchids adding to its ecological richness.
Join Darter Photography on Oct 24 – Nov 04, 2026 on an action-packed wildlife photography tour to Madagascar. Explore the varied ecosystems and landscapes on this island. Learn the secrets of wildlife photography. And experience wildlife like never before in this wonderland.

Arrive in Antananarivo and transfer to the hotel. In the evening, we go through a round of introductions followed by an orientation session about the tour. We retire after dinner, in anticipation of the upcoming adventure over the next 10 days.
Post breakfast, we transfer to the airport to fly to Morondava. Upon arrival, we drive northwards to the Kirindy Reserve, nestled within a dry deciduous forest. Kirindy is home to the famous Fossa - the largest predator in Madagascar, and a variety of lemur species.
After a relaxed late evening, we head out on a night walk through the reserve, where you will have the opportunity to spot nocturnal creatures, including reptiles and lemurs, in their natural habitat.
Today, we explore Kirindy reserve through day and night walks. We'll work on photographing various species of lemurs, including Red-fronted brown lemur, Red-tailed sportive lemur, mouse lemurs and the iconic Verreaux's sifaka, often referred to as the dancing sifaka. If we are very lucky, we might run into the fossa too!
We'll keep our eyes peeled out for other forms of wildlife too, including birds, chameleons, geckos and more.
After breakfast, we drive to Morondava.
Late afternoon, we visit the iconic Baobab avenue to get some wonderful silhouettes of the towering trees, an icon of Madagascar, at sunset.
At dawn, we head to Baobab Avenue to get another perspective of the iconic place at sunrise.
Depending on the flight schedule, you will be transferred to the airport and fly back to
Antananarivo. Upon arrival, transfer to hotel and relax.
After the breakfast, we will visit Tsarasaotra Park in Antananarivo. This is a great place to watch some of the waterfowl in Madagascar, along with some of the animals that call the capital city home.
Then, we will drive eastwards to Andasibe National Park. We reach late afternoon and check into our rooms.
In the evening, we head out on a night walk on the border of the forest to spot nocturnal animals.
After a 4WD ride on a bumpy road, you will reach Mantadia National Park. The hike through Mantadia is rather challenging but worth it to explore the primary rainforest. We will look for Diademed sifaka, Black-and-white ruffed lemurs, the
insectivorous tenrecs and the rainforest-dependent ground rollers.
In the afternoon, you will get closer to lemurs at Lemur Island, a private reserve managed by Vakona lodge.
After breakfast, we will head to Analamazaotra National Park. On this hike, we hope to see the two largest lemur species - Indri and Diademed Sifaka. In addition, we'll also look for other interesting animals like the Mossy leaf-tailed gecko, Parson's chameleon, Peacock day gecko and more.
Then, you will continue eastwards to reach Manambato. From there, you will have a boat transfer to reach Ankanin’ny Nofy with its white beach situated in board of Ampitabe Lake. Check-in at hotel and relax.
We will spend an entire day in Akanin'ny Nofy. We will visit the private reserve of Palmarium with a guide. This is one of the best places in Madagascar to photograph lemurs at close range.
In the evening, we will take a boat trip for a night walk in a private Island. Our main target this evening will be the magnificent Aye-aye, a one of a kind lemur.
In the morning, we will have boat transfer and then drive back to Andasibe by end of afternoon.
After dusk, we will do a night walk in Andasibe.
In the morning, we hike inside VOIMMA reserve. This is a community-managed reserve that has an incredible diversity of wildlife within a small area. We will try to see Indris here again, in addition to other wildlife.
We will head back to Antananarivo after the hike in VOIMMA.
Today, we fly out of Antananarivo, with our memory cards teeming with photographs.

Shreeram MV is a professional photographer, photography mentor and naturalist. What started off as a fascination for birds in a lake behind his house turned into a journey across the natural world. For this IIM Bangalore graduate, the passion for travel and wildlife enabled him to charter his own course outside the corporate world. He has explored and photographed places across the world as diverse as the savannahs of Africa, the ice continent of Antarctica, the islands of New Zealand, the rainforests of the Western Ghats, the salt marshes of Kutch, the grasslands of Tal Chapar, the deciduous forests of South and Central India, the high-altitude plateau of Ladakh, the coasts of peninsular India, the forests of North-east India and the islands of Andaman. His approach to wildlife photography has evolved into telling stories about the place and its habitats, biodiversity and human interactions with nature. He is a well-published and awarded photographer. His articles and photographs have been published in diverse print and digital magazines such as National Geographic Traveller, Sanctuary Asia, Saevus, Lonely Planet India, Terrascape, Nature inFocus and JLR Explore. As a naturalist, he has been associated with Jungle Lodges and Resorts and Karnataka Eco-tourism Development Board in training and certifying naturalists from across the state. His approach to wildlife photography is to bring back photographs that tell stories – about the place and its habitats, the diversity of flora and fauna and human interactions with the wilderness. Composition and light are his favourite tools in crafting new perspectives of the natural world. His personalized style of mentorship, where he works with each participant’s individual interests and strengths, has been much appreciated over the years.
