The Sarus Trail - where Bharatpur and Chambal come alive with birds.
Trip Overview

Keoladeo Ghana National Park is a dreamscape for wildlife photographers. Tree-lined avenues, misty ponds, and the distant calls of Sarus Cranes create a setting where light, subject, and silence come together effortlessly. Early mornings offer soft, directional light, while the calm atmosphere allows photographers to work patiently and deliberately.

With no motor vehicles allowed, the park is explored on foot, bicycle, or e-rickshaw, an enormous advantage for photography. The minimal disturbance means birds are relaxed and approachable, allowing for natural behavior, eye-level compositions, and clean frames. Ducks and geese fill the wetlands, cormorants and darters surface with fish, storks forage along pond edges, and herons hold statue-like poses. The highlight for many is photographing Sarus Cranes, especially during their misty morning courtship displays.

The experience extends to the National Chambal Sanctuary, where a guided boat safari offers rare photographic opportunities. Here, photographers can capture endangered species such as gharials, Indian and black-bellied skimmers, red-crowned roof turtles, and the elusive Gangetic Dolphin often at close range and in beautiful riverine light. Together, Bharatpur and Chambal offer a rich, varied portfolio of bird and wildlife images in a short span of time.

  • Day 1:

Reach Bharatpur for lunch. Your photography mentor will then give a brief introduction to the park and an overview of photography in the park. It’s now time for our first visit to the park. Prepare to be enamoured by the beautiful environs of this world-renowned park and the diversity of birds around you. After a wonderful sunset, we return to the hotel. Around dinner, your photography mentor will conduct a detailed session on photographing birds of Bharatpur. He’ll also review photographs that you’ve clicked in the evening session and give you inputs. We then retire for the day.

  • Day 02

We start the day early (around sunrise) to get the best of morning activity and good light for photography. The activity of birds is high in the mornings and we’ll work on photographing the maximum diversity of birds as well as birds in action. Foggy weather will also help us make some dreamy compositions of birds in the park.

After a short rest break in the hotel for lunch (you can charge your batteries and transfer your photographs during this time), we’ll head out for an afternoon trip into the park. With a better understanding of the photography options that are available, we can choose to spend time at the most productive places for photography or explore parts of the park that we haven’t visited in the morning.

In the evening, your photography mentor will review your photographs from the day. We’ll also discuss the action plan for the next day.

  • Day 03

Another early start into the Keoladeo Ghana Bird Sanctuary, where we’ll look for interesting bird activity in the morning.

After an early lunch, we drive to the National Chambal Sanctuary a couple of hours away from Bharatpur. The river and its banks are home to many an endangered species, including Gharials, Indian Skimmers, Black-bellied Terns, Red-crowned Roofed Turtles and Gangetic Dolphins. We embark on a 2-hour boat safari here that takes us to various places along the river that are interesting for wildlife sightings.

  • Day 04

Our last morning in this wonderful park is here. We’ll photograph species that we’ve missed over the past 2 days and exploring parts of the sanctuary that we may not have visited earlier. After breakfast, we start our journey back home with memories of amazing experiences and our memory cards full of great images.

Shreeram MV is a professional photographer, photography mentor and naturalist. What started off as a fascination for birds in a lake behind his house turned into a journey across the natural world. For this IIM Bangalore graduate, the passion for travel and wildlife enabled him to charter his own course outside the corporate world. He has explored and photographed places across the world as diverse as the savannahs of Africa, the ice continent of Antarctica, the islands of New Zealand, the rainforests of the Western Ghats, the salt marshes of Kutch, the grasslands of Tal Chapar, the deciduous forests of South and Central India, the high-altitude plateau of Ladakh, the coasts of peninsular India, the forests of North-east India and the islands of Andaman. His approach to wildlife photography has evolved into telling stories about the place and its habitats, biodiversity and human interactions with nature. He is a well-published and awarded photographer. His articles and photographs have been published in diverse print and digital magazines such as National Geographic Traveller, Sanctuary Asia, Saevus, Lonely Planet India, Terrascape, Nature inFocus and JLR Explore. As a naturalist, he has been associated with Jungle Lodges and Resorts and Karnataka Eco-tourism Development Board in training and certifying naturalists from across the state. His approach to wildlife photography is to bring back photographs that tell stories – about the place and its habitats, the diversity of flora and fauna and human interactions with the wilderness. Composition and light are his favourite tools in crafting new perspectives of the natural world. His personalized style of mentorship, where he works with each participant’s individual interests and strengths, has been much appreciated over the years.
