Wildlife Photography Tip: Patience

Patience is what gets you from a good portrait photograph…..

…to a great behaviour photograph!

Montagu's Harrier - Behaviour

The latter photograph was the result of spending more than 10 minutes observing the bird at close proximity. Initially, the bird posed for many portraits, while not moving too much and keeping a constant eye on the photographers. As time elapsed, she relaxed a bit and started preening (the act of making their feathers streamlined) and stretching (as seen in the second photograph).  Behaviour shots add a new dimension to natural history, sometimes even illustrating features that may not be evident from portraits (like the details on the wings in the latter photograph).

This is one of the many aspects that we would be covering in our upcoming Wildlife Photography Workshop in March. Stay tuned for more details…
